Discover some of the key elements in creating your boho home.
A spring blog from Distrikt by Mia
Hi everybody! Early spring feels like a good time to share some of the elements that will help you discover the art of creating comfort and style, while weaving a bohemian flavour into the tapestry of your home. Here at Distrikt by Mia, I think you will agree, we have mastered the art of functionality with eclectic design. Kilim rugs and cushions are central to the warm and welcoming feeling we have created here. Let’s take a look at how they can transform your space.
Firstly, what are Kilim cushions and rugs and why choose them for your home?
Kilim rugs can be traced back to the nomadic people of Turkey and Afghanistan where they served practical purposes such as blankets, seat mats and wall decoration. They are hand woven and often patterned with geometric designs, although originally, they would have been adorned with amulets and other symbolic patterns. They are made from wool and jute and are incredibly durable as well as having an understated ethnic charm and timeless appeal.
I choose each of the rugs and cushions here at Distrikt by Mia with a variety of interior styles in mind. The versatility of these iconic pieces means that they complement a wide range of interior styles, from modern minimalist to boho chic. You may be drawn to earthy tones or bold colourful geometric pattern, and choosing a kilim rug or cushion offers a variety of styling options.
Another attractive reason to choose one of these beauties is the aspect of sustainability. Made from wool and jute they are both durable and eco-friendly. So when you choose a kilim you are not only investing in a cool aesthetic but also a very sustainable product.
Here are some styling ideas
In a living room. If you have a neutral coloured sofa use a variety of kilim patterns in cohesive tones to create a very welcoming feeling, almost like a Bedouin tent. When placing any rug on the floor, try to ensure the rug is big enough to fill the space in front of the sofa, coming from under the sofa. For a kilim rug to make an impact it needs to be on a plain background like a wooden floor or a neutral carpet.
For a more modern minimalist look, the same textured look will work on a light neutral coloured sofa, however ensure the walls are also a neutral colour. Using a rug as a wall hanging has great impact, against a neutral wall colour. A kilim will work so well as a piece of art and if you hang a mirror in the vicinity, it will reflect these earthy pieces adding depth to your design.
In the bedroom. Paired with some plain velvet accent cushions, a kilim cushion will give a very luxurious look, especially when styled on crisp white cotton bed linen. Again a wall rug will work really well above a bed for extra drama.
Outdoors I am being very positive now guys. WHEN our beautiful hot summer comes along, consider using kilim rugs and cushions on your deck or patio for a rich, chic outdoor look.
